De Bodleian Library is de oudste openbare bibliotheek van Europa. De bibliotheek is een voorname onderzoeksbibliotheek van de univesiteit van Oxford en de op een na grootste bibliotheek in Engeland. De Bodleian Library is ook een van de zes bibliotheken die depotplicht kennen voor alle werken die zijn gepubliceerd in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Dit houdt in dat een uitgever in ieder geval verplicht is om een uitgegeven exemplaar aan de British Library toe te sturen, maar op verzoek ook aan de andere bibliotheken die onder deze depotplicht vallen.
Geschiedenis
De bibliotheek is eerst als instituut in Oxford gesticht in de veertiende eeuw door Thomas Cobham. Cobham was toen de bisschop van Worcester. De eerste kleine verzameling boeken groeide snel uit tot een grote nadat tussen 1435 en 1437 een groot aantal manuscripten van Humphrey van Gloucester werden ontvangen. Aan het einde van de 16e eeuw raakte de bibliotheek in verval en werd veel meubilair verkocht. Ook zijn er toen vele manuscripten verdwenen. Aan het begin van de 17e eeuw werd door Thomas Bodley nieuw leven in de bibliotheek geblazen door het schenken van fondsen en een groot deel van zijn eigen boekenverzameling. Op 8 november 1602 werd de bibliotheek officieel herropend en de naam gewijzigd in de Bodleian Library.
Op dit moment telt de collectie van de Bodleian Library ondeveer 8 miljoen boeken.
